FAQ Teeth Whitening

Zoom Teeth Whitening is an in-office procedure that uses a strong tooth whitening solution
together with a specialized ultraviolet lamp to lighten discolored teeth. A dental cleaning is
recommended prior to a Zoom whitening session. The presence of plaque and calculus during
your whitening procedure could cause less than optimal results.

The complete teeth whitening procedure takes about an hour and a half in our clinic. The procedure begins with a preparation period followed by three 15-minute sessions of bleaching. A desensitizing gel is applied after the Zoom session to help with post-operative sensitivity.

Almost anyone can benefit. However, teeth whitening treatment may not be as effective for some as it is for others. Patients with artificial teeth, caps, crowns, veneers, and existing dental fillings in the “smile line” will likely have uneven results because those restorations do not whiten.

Teeth with multiple discolorations, bands, splotches or spots due to tetracycline use or fluorosis do not whiten as well. Dr. Tushar Shirude can determine if you are a viable candidate for this procedure through a thorough oral examination, including a shade assessment.

By following some simple post whitening care instructions, your teeth will always be lighter than they were before. To keep your teeth looking their best, we recommend flossing, brushing twice daily, professional dental cleanings, and occasional touch-ups with a “bleaching tray” teeth whitening agent.

Yes. Extensive research and clinical studies indicate that whitening teeth under the supervision of a dentist is safe. In fact, many dentists consider whitening the safest cosmetic dental procedure available. As with any tooth whitening product, Zoom is not recommended for children under 16 years of age and pregnant women or women who are breastfeeding. Because the Zoom procedure uses a UV lamp, patients taking any drugs that increase photosensitivity should consult with their physician before undergoing Zoom treatment.

Sensitivity during the treatment may occur with some patients. The Zoom light generates minimal heat which is the usual source of discomfort. You can also use an anti-sensitivity toothpaste or prescription strength fluoride prior to and after treatment.

There are many causes. The most common include aging and consumption of staining substances such as coffee, tea, colas, tobacco, red wine, etc. During tooth formation, consumption of tetracycline, certain antibiotics or excessive fluoride may also cause tooth discoloration.
